Theories behind why we dream and what causes us to dream

Theories behind why we dream and what causes us to dream

Chapter 5

In this video lesson we talked about some of the theories behind why we dream and what causes us to dream. Download the attachments titled Dream 1 and Dream 2 and read some real life accounts of dreams that people have had. After reading the dreams answer the questions below for each and post your answers in the discussion board below.

Which theory of dreaming do you think each dream falls into?

Why?

What do you think each dream means if there is any symbolism?

Dream 1: My sister and I came up with a conspiracy to burn down my Mom and Dad’s house. They were gone and we had an opportunity to burn it down. My sister and her husband had gotten a lot of things ready and had sent me in to burn the house down. I went there with my friend do it. But when I got there I realized that if I burned the house down I’d lose all my childhood belongings- like pictures, clothing, toys. I had very limited time before I was to burn the house down and so I started stressing out. So I decided to start running around the house trying to decide what to take with me before I burned it down. I’d pick something up then second guess myself and put it back down, then pick something else up and then second guess myself again. Then I went to my bedroom and felt really stressed. I had no idea what to grab. I finally grabbed my wedding dress that was hanging in my closet, even though I didn’t really care about it. I ran downstairs and knew I was way out of time and was definitely in some sort of danger. I got downstairs and then it hit me- I was about to do something illegal! So I decided not to burn the house down and just run for it! Then I woke up.

Dream 2 Dream: I am my younger self in the dream. My mom brings me a ball of pizza dough and places it in my arms like a baby. As I held it, it began to expand until it almost seemed to turn into a balloon on a string. As I looked at it, my mother walked over to me and shouted, “Now the dancing begins!”. Pouring hot water into the bath tub I was instructed to hold the balloon steady as the rising steam swirled around it. To my amazement as the steam passed all around it, the balloon began to cook like bread. Without any further instruction I felt like I knew when the bread would be ready. So I waited until it felt like it was going to be just right and then I pulled out a plate and it slowly floated down until it landed on its surface.

Chapter 6

In the Chapter 6 video lesson you learned a lot of learning theory vocabulary words. In this activity you are going to test how well you can recognize these new terms you learned in real life situations. In the attached PDF there are pictures which represent the different words you learned from our chapter on learning theory. In this activity you are going to try and match the words you learned with the picture I’ve given you to see how many you can match correctly. This activity can be difficult so don’t worry if you have a hard time guessing correctly, you are graded on effort not accuracy. I’ll post the answer key after the assignments due date. Use the book to refresh yourself on the meaning of each of the words as you try to connect each word with its picture.

Here are some of examples of how this activity is to be done.

One of the words in the word bank in the attached document is neutral stimulus. If you saw this picture and guessed neutral stimulus you would be correct. A neutral stimulus is something that doesn’t make you feel or think very much because you haven’t made any associations with the object or recognize it.

One of the words in the word bank in the attached document is unconditioned response. If you guessed unconditioned response for this picture you would be correct. An unconditioned response is something that you naturally have an association with because you never had to learn it. In this case it is the association you have with food, which is an association that each of us from birth had had that no one had to teach us.

Hints: Two of the words aren’t used and two of the pictures could have more than one right answer, which means two of the words could be used twice!

Post your answers by either attaching the downloadable PDF with your guesses written in the margins, or simply itemize your guesses like below in your reply to this discussion board:

Picture 1: Guess

Picture 2: Guess

Picture 3: Guess

Chapter 8

In this video lesson you learned about thinking, intelligence and language. So for this weeks activity you are going to explore and test your thinking patterns and styles.

Within the attached PDF are 3 activities.

1. The first challenges you to make a real life decision using inductive and deductive reasoning, which is a form of decision making you learned about in this weeks video lecture.

2. The second challenges you to use your representative heuristics to asses and judge people you’ve never met before. An answer key telling you about who these people are will be posted after the due date for this discussion.

3. The third asks you to think about the kind of intelligences you have through reflective questioning.

Answer the questions in the attached PDF and attach it to your reply to this discussion, or paste your answers from the attached PDF in your reply to this discussion.

Chapter 9

In this weeks lecture you watched a film about babies. . This weeks activity I want you to write a one page (250 word) summary of the film based on the three questions below. These questions are based on terms from your textbook. So make sure you read about temperaments, reflexes and motor and perceptual skills from Chapter 9 of your textbook before writing this summary, otherwise you will fail the assignment. The summary is not in MLA or APA format and simply needs to be posted as a reply to this discussion. The three questions are:

What kind of temperament did each baby have?

What kind of reflexes did you see each of the babies display?

What kind of motor and perceptual skills did you notice?

Chapter 10

In this video lesson you learned about motivation and what drives our psychology to live the lives we do?

Attached is your activity for this week. It has two parts. First to reflect on your goals and what motivates them and second, to see where your goals fall on the Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. You can either attach the completed activity to your reply in this discussion or answer the activity by putting your answers in a reply and then posting it to this discussion board.

Chapter 12

In the chapter 12 video lesson you learned about personality and what makes up a persons personality. In this weeks lesson you are going to interact with some real personality tests that were mentioned in chapter 12. The Rorschach Inkblot test, the Thematic Apperception Test and a fill in the blank test.

These personality tests are different than other personality tests because they test your personality by using projection. Projection in psychology is used to determine how our personality and brain sees the world by giving us situations that bring out our inner thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Just like when we walk through a museum, one piece of art makes someone feel happy, while the same piece of arts makes someone feel sad, projection tests work the same way.

In the attached document which has your activity you are going to see what “comes out of you” using projective personality assessments. After you post your answers in the reply section by either attaching a filled out document to your reply or typing in your answers, take some time to read other peoples projections and see how your answers differ. When we can identify how we see the world, we get a chance to learn so much about our personality.

Chapter 13

In this chapters video lesson you learned about the way society shapes your psychology. You may have your own independent decisions and feelings, but how many of them have been shaped by the world around you?

In this weeks activity you are going to reflect on how society and culture has shaped the way you think, feel and believe and also how society sees people like you.

In the attached document are three sections of questions. Answer each question in each section with 2 or 3 sentences. You can either answer them in the document and attach it to your reply or answer the questions and put them in your reply to this discussion.

In this weeks final activity you are going to be completing a wellness worksheet which encourages you to reflect, evaluate and plan for better wellness in all the different areas of your life. This final activity does not need to be turned in and is not worth any points, but is simply for you to print out and take with you for personal reflection and contemplation as you take the lessons of this course with you.
