Social media is a very powerful tool that is used today to share more information than we even need to know. This can be a good thing and this can also be a very bad thing. The first thing that comes to mind of the George Floyd case that happened in the summer of 2020. This was a case and incident that was shared over and over again on social media, and all over the news. People wanted to bring awareness to the way people are treaded by the police, and the way you can be treated because of the color of your skin. This whole case started the Black Lives Matter movement.
According to Journal of Quantitative Criminology by Wickes. R. (2017) The article Neighborhood Social Ties and Shared Expectations for Informal Social Control states that “The exercise of informal social control requires the availability of neighborhood social ties and shared expectations for informal social control. Neighborhood social ties include friendship ties, instrumental relationships with neighbors and links to organizations internal or external to the neighborhood.” In a way, this was a way to gain control of a social situation and put an end to police brutality and targeting specific groups of people. You have to start with the neighborhood and spread the word with videos and news. I would say that this was very effective to the degree in which it was meant to be.
I would have to say that it can be practical for somethings but not all things. I think again, that this can be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time.

Social media has a big impact on our daily lives and especially social control. Everybody use social media now days to keep up with the latest new across the world. However, social media has affected social control due to negative and deviant behaviors. For example, the advertising of the use of drugs being shared across the media. This type of behavior makes is difficult to gain social control of criminal activity.
I believe it is important to apply ethical principles to social media, because social media allows anyone to share basically anything online. Therefore if polices are not discussed and put in place than it would allow anyone to share important private information with anyone.
