Part 1] :
Bovine Mystique is a prestige complex which centres on the livestock domain of the Basotho people living in Lesotho in Africa. Lesotho had rich farm lands which had been taken by South Africa and hence it became a land locked country with strict national boundaries , less resources and its citizens could make money only by working in the South African mines, making it a peasant economy. The government administrators had the only aim of maintaining power and wanted to develop the country but lacked the resources and technical knowledge.
The men had to work away at the mines for a longer time and to accumulate resources for future after retirement, they invested in livestock. It was a cultural tradition among the Basotho people to invest in livestock and keep it as a household property. This livestock was used for the socio-economic affairs of the community and it served the purpose of being a prestige for the family, a retirement fund and it encouraged social interaction among the Bosotho people.
Part 2] :
Due to lack of resources, the Bosotho men had to work away at mines and they earned wages which were not stored monetarily but used for import purchases of livestock. As per tradition, this livestock was not treated as a commodity but as a household property. Only men had the rights to deal with the livestock property and decide whether to sell or buy. The number of livestock was dependent on the wage rate and hence, the men with more number of livestock were considered wealthy and had prestige in community.
The men working at mines had an early retirement age of 40s -50s and hence, they collected and kept the highest possible number of livestock as a property so that it can be used to generate cash after retirement. The livestock was also used as an important property to avail cash during wedding and therefore was also termed as the Bridewealth. The cattle also served as the placeholders of their owners and represented the owners absence from the community as they migrated frequently to work at the mines.
Thus, for Basotho men, the livestock was an important property that gained them prestige in the community, served as a source of cash during wedding and retirement and it also strengthened the socio- economic ties among the community. Therefore, the Bosotho people were more interested in buying the cattle rather than sell it.
