Section A – Chapter 4 Leader as an Individual
1. Explain Values. What are Newmark and Buckmasters end values? Discuss.
Values can be explained as a philosophy based on leadership skills to a firm, an organization or, even individuals and all stakeholders involved without a personal gain mind (Watts, 2008). Newmark and Buckmaster possess various end values, including making money were not one of their goals despite having an advantage from their massive following by people globally. This is portrayed in an instance by Buckmaster when asked about maximizing revenue plan by warning that it wasnt part of the goal. Their leadership skills are outstanding, and despite that, they are guided by Craigslist’s “nerd values” as they are reflected in their day to day personal lives. Both Newmark and Buckmaster live. Despite living comfortably, Newmark drives an aged Toyota while, on the other hand, Buckmaster has no car under his name (Sadler, 2003).
2. In chapter 4 we spoke about Hermanns Whole Brain Model. Do you believe understanding your thinking preferences according to the whole brain model (Hermanns Whole Brain Model) can help you be a better leader? Discuss
Yes. I believe understanding your thinking preferences according to the Whole Brain Model can help me become a better leader because of various reasons, which include; first, allowing me to understand all kinds of people around me regardless of their different personalities. Secondly, it can also help me become a better leader because, with the understanding of my thinking preferences, I can understand various ways of perceptions from the people around me. Finally, understanding your thinking preferences can help me become a better leader by helping me realize my weaknesses and my strengths hence providing an understanding of my thinking preferences (Malphurs, 2004).
Section B – Chapter 7 Followership
1. In chapter 7 we spoke about different strategies used for managing up (managing the relationship and influencing your superior). Describe the strategy for managing up that you most prefer. Explain.
I prefer the empowerment strategy. As a leader, your subordinates may have concerns but may find it hard to bring them up because they may feel that you will always find a way to defuse them. Providing an environment that allows identifying people’s concerns should empower them to communicate effectively (Watts, 2008).
2. Why is followership important in the discussion of leadership? Discuss.
Followership is an essential pillar of leadership. Leaders expect those who follow them to work on the tasks given to achieve results. This can only be achieved if leaders provide direction and motivation by leading as an example (Sadler, 2003).
Section C – Chapter 9 Leadership Communication
1. How does Mulally foster an open communication climate? Explain the meaning of communicating with candor
Mulally emphasis is on every member to have knowledge of the plan and where specialization is required. He insists that all stakeholders must be involved with honesty being a responsibility to all. Communicating with candor can be explained as having open communication (Watts, 2008).
2. Why is leader communication crucial during a crisis? Discuss
A leader’s communication during a crisis is crucial as it gives the direction or instead suggests the actions to be taken by the members; leaders are the source of motivation, direction, and even the influencers of any step.
Section D – Chapter 10 Leading Teams
1. Explain virtual teams in Nokia. Why is being a team leader more challenging when people are scattered (distributed) in different geographical locations?
Virtual teams in Nokia are significant since they are made from a selection of skilled people with a collaborative mindset who are highly committed to their duties. Being a team leader is more challenging when people are distributed in different geographical locations due to the differences in time zones and cultures and beliefs (Sadler, 2003).
2. Explain the task specialist role and socioemotional role as important roles for achieving team effectiveness.
The specialist role is a key to achieving team effectiveness as the specialist gives instructions to the team members and listens to their ideas, especially when the members know what is needed from them (Malphurs, 2004).
