TASK ANALYSIS 2
EDU 612 Curriculum Planning and Organization Instructional Task Analysis
Grade Level: Sixth Grade Subject/Course: Social Studies Topic of Unit: The Earths Patterns and Physical Systems, and their affects on our planet Detailed Description of Instructional Task: Students will identify the Earths four physical systems, Atmosphere, Biosphere, Lithosphere, and Hydrosphere and explain how Earths physical systems affect and shape the environment (G.6.3). I will present a PowerPoint presentation introducing the Earths physical systems. In their cooperative groups, students will identify and explain the affect these systems and human interaction have on the environment. Students will summarize and take notes from reference materials investigating how natural phenomenon created by theses systems and human interaction shape the physical environment. Students will use a cause and effect graphic organizer to help them understand this relationship. They will create a presentation, demonstrating their understanding of the task, using iMove and link it to a QR code that can be scanned and viewed by classmates using their iPads. This presentation will be a formative assessment. Step 1: What is the academic purpose of this task? Content and context: what learning is expected from this task? The purpose of this task is to have students identify the Earths four physical systems, Atmosphere, Biosphere, Lithosphere, and Hydrosphere and explain how Earths physical systems affect and shape the environment. Students will also explore the affects humans have on the environment. This task will support students intellectual development by using an inquiry-based teaching strategy. Students will summarize and take notes on relevant information that will help them identity and explain Earths physical systems and how they affect the Earths surface. They will also explore the affects human have on the Earths environment. The purpose of the Graphic organizer is to provide concrete organization of notes so that students can see the cause and effect relationships. Students will produce an iMove as a formative assessment. Students will be able to view each others projects using the QR codes. It is expected that students will be able to identify the Earths four physical systems, explain how they affect and shape our environment, and identify ways humans affect the environment. Step 2: What does someone need to know and be able to do to complete the instructional task successfully? Students will need the following prior knowledge in order to complete the task:
1. Earth/ Sun Relationship and how it affects the environment (transfer of knowledge from previous lesson for this same standard)
2. Use the table of contents, index, and subject headings in a reference book 3. Summarize non-fiction reference material 4. Recognize main ideas and important facts 5. Effective note-taking 6. Relationship between cause and effect
TASK ANALYSIS 3
7. How to make an iMove * 8. How a QR code works * Instructions on how to make an iMove and QR code will be provided; however prior
knowledge will be beneficial. Scaffolding lessons or mini lessons may need to be prepared for the above skills to support this task.
Step 3: Identify the standards that apply to this task at least one content standard and one literacy [read/writing] standard. Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards for the Social Studies (2018)
G.6.3 – Identify geographic patterns in the environment that result from the processes of Earths physical systems Mississippi College and Career Readiness Standards for English Language Arts (2016)
