Understanding Obesity in Childhood
Obesity is the accumulation of fat in fatty tissues, which in turn leads to adverse health complications. Also, obesity is one of the severe problems in today’s society that happens in children. Obesity in childhood is increasing every year because of so many causes. It could be caused by genetics, the lack of eating diet, and the lack of reduction in physical. (Krushnapriya et al., 2015). Obesity in childhood is concerned with developing children’s health, which increases the risk to patients such as hypertension, coronary artery, diabetes, osteoarthritis, gallstones, fatty liver, and some cancers. Also, fat in children does not stop growing when they get older. High fat is leading to severe psychological effects in children, such as low self-esteem, discouragement, sociability, and poor learning. Therefore, obesity in childhood can be a source of future health disasters. Comment by Vanessa Ortega: due to so many causes. Comment by Vanessa Ortega: Which cancers? People usually wonder why some people can eat anything and still not gain weighthowever, people who eat just a little and gain weight a lot. The reason is that your value depends on how many calories your body consumes and how many you burn up calories. Furthermore, genes might affect food cravings and digestive systems ( Harvard Health Publishing, 2009). According to Bernard F et al. ( 2013), children who have (obese) parents obese have a higher risk of developing obesity. At age 17, children with obese parents have a rate of obesity three times than children with non-obese parents. Among obese children, about eighty percent of children have one parent obese, and thirty percent have both obese parents. A baby’s birth weight can also affect whether a baby will become obese later on. Babies who weigh more than eight pounds at birth are more likely to become obese than babies with an average birthweight. Genetics affects a hormone involved in fat regulation called leptin resistance. Leptin is a hormone that reduces appetite and controls weight by signaling the brain to eat less when the body fat stores are too high. The problem is that leptin doesn’t work as it should in obese people. Leptin can’t signal the brain to eat less. This control is lost – this condition is called leptin resistance and is thought to be the genetic predisposition to obesity ( Hormone Health Network, 2018). Children who are genetically overweight and obese have a sluggish metabolic rate (take longer to burn calories) or have more significant cravings, making weight loss difficult. Hence, obesity is the result of genetics. Comment by Vanessa Ortega: Make sure your topic sentences are clear and in the correct order. For example for paragraph #1,…High fat is leading to a poor self-esteem in children. Then go on from there describing how high fat is leading to poor self-esteem throughout your paragraph. Eating unhealthy foods regularly, such as fast foods, baked goods, and snacks can easily make children gain weight. Sweet desserts can also cause weight gain, and sugary drinks, including. Fruit juices, are the culprits of obesity in children (CDC, 2019). Besides, people in some communities have limited resources to access supermarkets. They will choose convenient foods that do not spoil quickly, such as frozen meat and canned cakes ( Aitsi-Selmi, A. 2015). According to a survey by the Institute of Social Medicine Research (ISMS) in 2013, up to 30% of mothers do not know their children are overweight, 15% of mothers with obese children still want their babies to gain more weight. Most moms always think healthy kids have more value than unhealthy kids. They often give the child a lot of food to prevent the lack of energy each time the child is sick; the mother pressures the child to eat or provides the child with a variety of supplement foods but micronutrient poverty. Thus, parents indirectly bring unhealthy nutrition that makes their children overweight. Lack of physical activity is another crucial factor associated with obesity in childhood. When you consume a large source of calories but don’t operate to burn them, that causes excess energy to accumulate in the form of obese fat ( Krushnapriya et al., 2015). Children are now having a habit of inactivity and are often today’s youth. They tend to relax by watching TV, surfing the internet, and playing computer games instead of exercising. Their parents choose traveling by motorbike or car instead of choosing a bike or walking – are all at risk of obesity. The less active they are, the fewer calories they will burn. In addition, physical activity affects how the human hormone works, which affects the way the body processes food. Several studies have shown that physical activity can help keep insulin levels steady, and unstable insulin levels can lead to weight gain. In addition to an appropriate diet, they should increase physical activity to drain excess energy. The amount of calories burned depends on the type of exercise, the duration, and the intensity of the movement. Parents or teachers should allow children to exercise at least 30 minutes a day with necessary activities such as jogging, cycling, swimming, etc. The more frequent and long-term exercise, the more significant impact on obesity prevention. The cause of obesity in childhood is by genetic factors, factors about eating, and physical habits. Therefore, to prevent the risk of obesity, people need to maintain children’s body weight at a reasonable level by balancing the number of calories you eat through food with the energy consumed through physical activity. Parents should learn about what foods to eat, which foods to avoid, and the right exercises to prevent obesity, protect your children’s health and quality of life. You did a great job for your rough draft Nguyen! Just make sure you fix your topic sentences for each paragraph, make your essay 3 pages long, fix your reference page, and work on your conclusion a bit more. You got this! Great effort!
