The Publics Role in Policy Making
The public has a role in influencing the making of public policy, especially in topic areas such as education policy, environmental policy, and, more recently, health care policy. How do Americans view certain issues? How have those views changed over time? What might be affecting those trends? This exercise relies upon work done by the think tank Public Agenda. Public Agenda is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that focuses on ensuring that the publics views are represented in decision-making. The organization offers a variety of ways to get people talking and learning from each other.
· Visit the website http://www.publicagenda.org. Under the tab Programs & Publications choose the Publics Agenda. . Choose one of the top reports that interests you and open the document. Summarize one of the main findings from its recent research.
· How do you believe that the public opinion data presented in the report shaped recommendations? How should and/or could the public opinion data be used by policy makers?
· Focus in on one policy issue contained in the selected report. What issues were raised? What policy options were debated by focus group participants? How could this information be used in policy formulation? Explain.
· Do you believe that public opinion data is important for policy development? Why or why not? When do you believe public opinion data helpful? When might it be detrimental?
