Chronic illnesses are becoming a prominent issue in the United States as healthcare costs continue to rise. As many patients choose to ignore routine preventative care visits due to either lack of insurance, increasing costs, negligence, or other factors, many of their conditions that could have been prevented or treated will progress into chronic conditions. Regardless of the situation, it is the responsibility of the physician to help patient’s manage these chronic issues and continue to follow-up with them. As this has become an increasing issue in the United States, efforts have been made to shift from managing chronic conditions to preventing them. An example of this is with obesity. Since many chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiac issues can result from obesity, education efforts have increased nation wide to try to combat this issue. Regardless of what specialty a physician practices in, they have a responsibility to help patients manage their care as well as educate them on how to prevent related diseases.
