This week we looked at the ethical use of big data. Look at 3 privacy statements for any companies you choose and discuss the similarities and difference between the 3 statements (post copies of the statements as a Word document for others to see). How do these 3 statements incorporate the ethics policy considerations mentioned in your text? Do you see any ethical concerns related to one or more of the statements that you found?

According to Walmart (2020) Official Website, “Our customers are number one -always. That is why everything we do is focus on providing customer service and delivering low prices. As always reminded them, their founder Sam Walton that a promise they make is a promise that they should keep. (Walmart, 2020). By keeping that promise, they gain their customer’s trust by sharing their personal information. In addition to that, Walmart builds a relationship with their client by providing them a clear, prominent, and easily accessible way on how they collect, use, share, and most of all, their protection. The company has a specific privacy notice that depends on their specialized operations. Additionally, they use security measures that include physical, administrative, and technical safeguards for customer personal information.

Target is another merchandise retailer like Walmart. Both companies have a privacy policy statement for all information that is collected or submitted to their consumers. Moreover, Target provides an analytic service such as Site Catalyst by Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics, and Crazy Egg that analyzes information for its website and mobile applications. In response to that, they have Adobe Analytics Privacy Practices, Google Privacy Practices, Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-On, and Crazy Egg’s Privacy Practices.

Costco Wholesale Corporation is an American Multinational Corporation like Walmart and Target. However, their merchandise is sold on a big discount exclusively to a club member that pays an annual membership. Compared to Walmart and Target, the company also has a Specific Privacy Notice to all its members and Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-On. Unfortunately, we as consumers believe that we are protected because of all these notices we received from this giant company. Isacoff (2014) mentioned, “The availability of larger data sets and ability to process the query from anywhere makes it attractive for an organization to exchange data and establish a relationship.” In other words, we still have responsibilities to make sure that we monitor and secure our personal information. As specified in the three companies’ privacy policy statements, they offer different ways to collect, use, or share personal information with consumers. And such as using the opt-in standard for automated phone and text messages and the opt-out standard for email, app notifications, and postal mail (Walmart, 2020).
