Paper Details
Immanuel Kant defined the cultural and intellectual phenomenon of the Enlightenment in 1784 as an Ausgang, as a “way out” or exit. Two centuries later, Michel Foucault argued that what was (and still was) significant about Kant’s definition of the Enlightenment was that it introduced into the modern world what Foucault called a “critical attitude.”

For the second paper please examine, analyze, and compare the concept of Enlightenment as it was presented by Kant and later Foucault.

In your essay, answer the following questions:

Kants says that Ausgang was a release from a “self-imposed immaturity” in which a person or human subject was free to use their own reason. Kant makes a distinction between the public use of reason and its private use. What does he mean by that distinction and why does he think it is significant?
Foucault is generally sympathetic to Kant’s definition of Enlightenment, but he warns against what he calls “Enlightenment blackmail.” What does Foucault mean by that?
Specifically, Foucault suggests that Kant’s Enlightenment introduced what he called modernity’s “critical attitude,” embodied by the French poet Charles Baudelaire. What does Foucault mean by “critical attitude”?
Foucault also makes a point of stressing that the Enlightenment must not be understood as a form of humanism. Why does Foucault think this? Based on our discussions of humanism throughout this course, do you agree or disagree with Foucault’s assessment?
For the paper it is absolutely imperative that you cite your sources using one of the acceptable academic citation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), and that the citations are correct. If you fail to submit a paper with citations you will fail the assignment. You must cite your sources.

Your paper must be submitted to Turnitin. There is a link to upload your paper at the bottom of this page.

The paper must include the following:

A descriptive title.
A thesis statement and an argument. Do not simply summarize or describe the sources. Provide an analysis of the meaning and significance of the texts. In other words, form an interpretation of the texts.
Provide evidence from the text to support your thesis statement. The evidence must come from the text itself.
Use citations with a works cited page at the end of your paper.
750-1000 words (a minimum of 3 full pages, roughly, 3-4 pages).
10 or 12-point readable font, double-spaced, with 1 margins
Submit your paper on Canvas using the Turnitin link. You will only be able to submit your paper once. You must submit the file in a .doc, .docx, or .rtf, format. Do not submit you paper in a .pdf or .pages format.
It is absolutely imperative that your paper contains citations of the sources used and that the citations are correct. Any paper without citations will fail the assignment. You must cite your sources.

Other tips:

Start your paper early. Dont wait until the night before the paper is due to begin writing.
Always write more than one rough draft. The more drafts you write, the better your paper will be.
Always proofread your paper one final time after you have run a spell check in your word processor.
