Assignment 11b: Isobars, Isotherms Name________________________
32 points total, Due November 17th, (Tuesday, 8 pm)
1. Analyzing Isobars: (10 points) Start by drawing isobars on the attached map for the 1008, 1012, 1016, 1020 and 1024 millibar contours. Label the center of the high pressure (the region greater than 1024 millibars) with an H and the center of the low with an L (less than 1008 millibars). I started drawing the 1016 to get you going.
You know that the Coriolis Effect deflects the wind. Instead of going straight from high to low, it curves and is roughly parallel to the isobars. Draw the wind patterns associated with your contour map. Use long arrows to show the direction of the wind.
a. Recall that south winds bring in warm air and north winds bring in cold air. Based upon that name 5 states that are likely having colder weather: __________________________________
b. Name 5 states are likely having warmer weather: ____________________________________
c. Knowing the direction that weather typically moves, issue a forecast for Chicago. Justify your answer.
wxmap adv2. Drawing Isotherms. (12 pts) Using the symbol guide in the lecture packet, analyze the temperatures here and draw isotherms for 40, 50 and 60oF. Ive drawn in the 70F contour as an example.
70 F isotherm
Answer the following.
A. Name two states where the wind is from the south. What are the temperatures there?
2. Name two states where the wind is from the North or Northwest. What are temperatures there?
Assignment 11b: Isobars, Isotherms Name________________________
3. Now that you have drawn the isotherms. Is there a place where you see a sharper temperature gradient? Mark that location on the map.
4. 1 pt extra credit. How do the winds change across this sharp temperature gradient?
3. Combining Isobars and Isotherms (10 pts)
Get the power point for the color isobars and isotherms for December 1, 2006
A. Label all the highs and lows with an H and an L. You can use the map of the US at the end of this assignment. No more than 2 or 3 of each on the map. And then draw likely wind arrows based upon these highs and lows and the pattern of the color contours.
B. Draw likely fronts. Use proper symbols to identify where it would most likely be a warm or cold front.
C. Indicate areas of likely precipitation. Where might it be snowing?
D. Using your knowledge of how weather patterns move across the country, issue a weather forecast for Atlanta GA. You must include temperature, winds and any possibility of precipitation.
