Overview & Instructions
It is important to be aware of our own beliefs, values, and biases when thinking about ethical dilemmas. Noticing our own attitudes and deliberately engaging in intellectual empathy (imaginatively putting oneself in another persons shoes to try to understand them) helps us set judgement aside. This is critically important both in building relationships with patient populations and in carrying on effective, civil discourse to solve problems.
Please answer each question by typing directly below the question in the gray field. Each section should have at least 2-3 complete sentences for full credit. The gray fields will expand as you type.
Rubric
Make sure to use the rubric found in Canvas to guide your work.
1. This week we discussed the case study Inequity in India: A Conditional Cash Incentive Scheme Janani Suraksha Yojana (Sec. 4.12, Case study 4). As you read the case study this week, what did you notice about your personal reaction? (If you felt anger or discomfort at parts of the story, this is a good hint that the cultural practices of the family in the case study and your values were in conflict.) What does your reaction indicate about your beliefs and assumptions about marriage, family power dynamics, and birth? Where do your beliefs about this case come from?
2. As you engaged in the discussions this week, did you have points of disagreement with your teammates? Give an example and describe how you felt and how you responded.
3. What are some challenges you may need to overcome when working with others who have different personalities? Is there a personality trait that you find particularly difficult to work with? Do you possess a personality trait that may challenging for your teammates to work with?
4. How well did you contribute to civil discourse this week? Did you communicate with respect and really listen to others points of view? Did you use respectful language, avoiding racial, ethnic, sexual, gender, and religiously biased terms? Did you complete your assignments on time and do your share of the work?
5. Describe one thing you will do to improve your personal contribution to civil discourse in the discussions over the next few weeks.
