In Modules 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, students are assigned a Written Exercise to be submitted to the Drop box area. The directions for the Written Exercise are:
You will complete a critical analysis and reflection.
This written exercise must be in APA style and format.
The exercise must be 400-words in length. Minimum of 400, maximum of 415. The Cover Page is included in total of 400-415 words!
When writing your papers, think in terms of providing a critical overview of the reading, discussing your thoughts on the significant facts of the material, and closing with your own conclusion(s).
The written exercise is due to the Assignment Box no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT. (The Dropbox is linked to Turnitin.) The assignment is worth 20 points.
This is what I am adding to the assignment so please follow the steps below:
1. Each week when you are assigned a Written Exercise, read over the material assigned for you that week. This should be material from the Chapters for the week in your Lilly textbook, some of which are also covered in the video from the module for that week.
2. Once you have identified what you are going to discuss in your paper by telling
me which Chapter you are discussing, summarize the material by telling me (in your own words) what the reading/material was about.
3. I need 400-words. I will accept anywhere from 400-415, but if you go over
415 I will deduct points and if you are under 400 words I will deduct points. The 400-415 words are for your entire paper including your name, date, etc. You do need a Cover Page, but you do not need an abstract. Please do not include an abstract or a Reference page! Nothing should be cited for these Exercise papers, so you do not need a Reference page! Make sure you double space. Use a 12-point font. Times New Roman or Arial are the accepted fonts. Proofread and watch your spelling, punctuation, and grammar (no little is or us please!)
4. Once you have completed your paper, save it in a .docx format. This means you must have Microsoft Word on your computer. All assignments need to be typed in Microsoft Word. If you do not have Microsoft Word, you will have to go to a public library to use their computer. Please save your paper with your name in it, such as: Smith – Week 2 Exercise.docx or something similar.
5. Once you are done with your paper you will load it into the Assignment link. It will automatically run through Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism. You do not need to do anything at that point, just submit it to the Assignment Drop box.
I want these Written Exercise papers to be less formal than a research paper. To me, they are a 400-word journal entry as to what your thoughts were about a particular topic from the assigned readings for that week. Use your own words! Write at least 6 I statements (I feel I believe I thought I think ) within your paper!
Dont use I agree, I disagree for all of your I statements. I need to know your thoughts and your feelings about the topic!
I have put together a handy check list (since I know some people, like myself, do well with check lists), and please go through this checklist and make sure you have all YES answers before you turn in your Written Exercise paper for this week. The 9 Steps – Written Exercise Paper check list: 1. Read the assigned chapters for the week from your Lily textbook that you want to comment on. Make sure to write which chapter (theory, etc.) you are writing on within the first sentence of your paper. 2. Have you written your paper as a “discussion” of the material and used your own words to analyze the material?
3. Using statements like, “I feel…” “I believe…” “I have noticed…” are great ways to write and critique from your own viewpoint. Do you have at least 6 of these types of “I” statements in your paper? (I agree and I disagree will not count towards the 6 required I feel or I believe requirement!) 4. Did I include an APA Cover Pager with the appropriate 6 lines? 5. Am I using Microsoft Word to type my paper? 6. Is my paper at least 400 words, but not over 415? (and this includes the Cover Page).
7. Am I writing in proper format – indenting the first sentence of each paragraph? A good rule of thumb is 3 paragraphs per page. 8. Have I used my spell check to check for any errors, as well as carefully proofread my paper? 9. Have I double-spaced, used 12-point font?
If you follow these 9 steps and can answer each one with a YES, you will be fine
for your paper! Thank you and please keep this handy somewhere!
Sincerely,
Professor Santiago
Below is the grading Rubric I will be using for the Exercise papers:
NOTE: All the items highlighted in yellow in my Sample paper (below) are showing I statements. Please have a minimum of 6 I feel or I believe statements in the paper (not just I agree or I disagree) but I statements that show me you are
thinking about the material and have thoughts about it. Use your own words! ??
Please note: this is a Sample Paper that I made up so please do not copy this page here. You may use this paper as a Template and type over it but do not use MY essay
on Lombroso. Sometimes a student will try to turn my paper in as theirs. ?
*Please note: the title on page 2 should say which chapter you are reviewing. Or, you may write this in the beginning sentence so that I know which chapter you are reviewing or writing about: Examples: I am going to discuss the readings from the textbook in Chapter 2. I am going to discuss Labeling Theory outlined in Chapter 7.
Please indicate which Chapter # you are discussing either in the title on page 2 OR in your first line. Continue on to 400-words (which is roughly 1.5 pages). Over 415, points will be deducted, under 400, points will be deducted as indicated on the Grading rubric. *The 400-415 words includes the entire document the paper and the Cover page. Please use your own words for this paper and aim for a minimum of 6 I
statements! ??
Double space all college papers! Use 12-point font (Arial or Times New Roman) All margins should be 1-inch on all four sides Please save your paper with your name in it, such as: Smith – Week 2 Exercise.docx or something similar. *Helpful tip: I suggest reading over the assigned Chapter that you want to write about for the week and then close your book and tell me how you feel about what you read. Writing a paper that way like a diary or a journal should come
easier to you and be a lot more fun to write! ??

Chapter 2 I am going to discuss the readings from the textbook in Chapter 2. I enjoyed
reading this week about Cesare Lombroso and his research on the Criminal Man. Although Lombrosos work is regarded as somewhat sexist and racist today, many of his ideas are still utilized in the movies when Hollywood chooses characters to play the murderers in movies. An example of this is in a movie I recently saw, Were the Millers (2013 movie) where the drug dealers bodyguard was portrayed as having a protruding jaw, lots of tattoos, beady eyes, etc. I thought about our assignment and how this would follow so closely along with what Lombrosos thoughts were during his time regarding criminals and how they appeared.
It is important to note that Lombroso studied males who were already criminals.
He took a large population that were already incarcerated and looked at them for similar
characteristics. He did not just go into the general population and stereotype people based on their looks and I feel that this is important to note. Many people today do
stereotype, and this can be based on appearances, last names, and nationalities, and
I think we must ask ourselves the question of why this may be.
Perhaps they witnessed a crime, or they were a victim of a crime and now they
are scared to be anywhere near someone who looks like the offender. Perhaps they
have watched too many movies on television, and they have a stereotype about how a
certain type of offender looks like. We often see this when they cast sex offenders in
movies. I understand how sometimes people are judged based on their looks. I feel
that I am sometimes discriminated against when I am around certain groups of people
3
that I may not look like, and Lombrosos writings made me think about this and how
important it is to learn why this occurs.
*Continue on until you have 400 – 415 words, from the Cover page to the end. No
references should be used, and no reference page included. Thanks!
**The highlighted words in yellow are just to point out various ways of writing I
statements in your paper. You need to have 6 of these but you dont need to
highlight them. Use your own words for these very simple Exercise papers! Do
not make this more difficult then necessary! ??
Please type normally, meaning that the left-column of the paper should be the ONLY side that is aligned (see below in yellow). Do not right-justify your paper on the right. Do not select the item on the tool bar (see the red X below) that aligns the right column:
Please type directly into your paper when completing this assignment! Do not use a Template when typing the Cover page. I cannot make corrections when a student does this and most of the time, Templates are not in correct APA Format!
Templates that most students use are found in the Tool Bar of MS Word (see below):
Oftentimes, the templates are outdated and incorrect and not in correct APA Format (7th edition). For example, below is one template that is popular on MS Word, but it is not correct APA Format and is the wrong edition.
Please do not use these Templates! Thank you!
Please email me if you have any questions and I am happy to answer them!
Sincerely, Professor Santiago
