Week 4 Responses
Good Afternoon All,
This weeks discussion is about Smuggling and organized crime.
What is smuggling from a legal perspective?
From a legal perspective smuggling is the act of facilitating the transportation of anything illegal. According to (Nasiri, 2002) Smuggling means the entrance and exit of goods through official or unofficial channels without paying state duties. (Abrishami et al. 2007) put smuggling into two categories. The first category is smuggling in of prohibited goods, such as drugs, weapons, Alcohol, and etc., Second category is smuggling permitted goods because certain criteria arent met.
What is smuggled and why?
Smuggling can come in many different forms. Some of the ways are listed as follows: the smuggling of humans, also known as human trafficking, and is the attempted transporting and illegal/unlawful entry of a person or persons across an international border. Human Smuggling happens when a person pay a certain amount to a smuggler to get them across the U.S/ Mexico border. There could be lots of reason for wanting to get smuggled into the U.S, One of the more common reasons is for a better way of life. Smuggling of illegal weapon and drugs. When drugs and Weapons hit the U.S markets they will get sold for nearly ten times the price.
Who benefits from smuggling and who is hurt by smuggling and how?
When it comes to smuggling there can be multiple beneficiaries. The two main parties involved in the process will make the most profit as the business is being conducted at a supply and demand. There may also be third party entities involved that contribute to the accomplishment of the process. Smuggling can have a negative impact on the economy. The increase of crime calls for more security and in turn has a negative impact on the communities. Instead of resources going to build the community, it goes towards security assets.
Besides smuggling, what other land and maritime border violations threaten the facilitation of legitimate trade?
The illegal entry of goods. When goods are illegally entered into the economy it drives the prices down of those consumer goods. Causing companies that makes those goods lose money.
What is the globalization of organized crime, and the increase in their associated networks capabilities increased the economic, political, cultural and diplomatic threat to the United States?
The globalization of organized crime is basically illegal activities that are planned and executed by a group in an organized fashion around the world. An example of the globalization of organized crime would be drug trafficking. The Drugs are sourced in Columbia, trafficked through the United States and then sold in the Europe. This spans three continents making it globalized organized crime, because selling and transporting drugs is a crime and it takes a group of people working together to make this happen, whether they get caught or not
