II. Written Reflection: Please answer each of the following questions once per refined piece of graphic design work (i.e., you will answer each question five times in total):
a. Professionalism: Design, develop, adapt, and present professional-quality graphic and media works that articulate a clear, coherent message using appropriate and effective technical and aesthetic design principles
i. Does the design address the goals of the project, address communication problems, and balance aesthetic and functional needs?
a. Graphic design work 1- David Bowies mag_swap.
For this project, I had to use the same photograph and create two different mastheads that would target different audiences. The first cover is for the type of audience who is interested in the life of the person and the people who knew the personality throughout his career, covering not just the artist but the people who surrounded him. The colors are meant to bring a serious tone to the life of the artist.
The second magazine aims to a more selective audience, that sees and recognizes the individual mainly as a musician and reviews his impact in the world as such. The bright background color with the music notes on the page immediately connects the subject to the music industry. His pink shades and exaggerated red color on the lips, act as a reminder of his early days as Ziggy Stardust when he wore some of his most outrageous costumes on his way to stardom.
Other changes were made such as removing punctuation, revising the font choices and outlines to make sure they are legible, adding volume number for better balance.
b. Graphic design work 2-Pasta Amore table tent.
This project is one of three pieces branding items created for a local Italian restaurant that specializes in homemade cooking. The colors chosen are reminiscent of Italian cuisine. Red for red sauce, the wooden white wash wooden background as what a rustic Italian kitchen table might have looked like, familiar vegetables with images of prepared Italian dishes and the Italian peninsula adorned with the Italian flag.
The nations symbols are used to express pride in ones nation or ones heritage and they seemed appropriate since Im promoting authentic Italian cuisine and need to increase the chances of being recognized as an authentic Italian restaurant.
Other revisions were made such as aligning the appetizer list and the dots leading to each of the individual appetizer prices.
c. Graphic design work 3-Cloudy Central Park
This photograph was part of a project for my Digital Photography class where I was to photograph different subjects using proper aperture and shutter speed combined with the best depth of field for maximum impact. This photograph focuses on the scenery that is composed of dark skies, a green-mysterious lake with many different boats gliding on the waters surface with beautiful trees flanking both sides of the lake. It shows the much talked about New Yorker spirit and the strong will that keeps entire families on the lake even when facing the terrible weather.
d. Graphic design work4-Music Event poster.
This poster was revised after receiving comments from the Module2 assignment. The background colors were changed to a more appropriate color to match the type of event I had in mind. The dark navy with the lighter shapes in the background (the background is a stretched-out photo of a stage during a live performance) is a much better color for the type of fun, night-time event Id imagined. The keyboard ribbon floating across the musician on the poster, provide more visual interest to call the viewers attention without overwhelming. The font color was changed to increase visibility almost as if they were the brightest stars against the dark sky in an outdoor concert. Some of the fonts were replaced with other complimentary fonts, to add variety and increase interest using hierarchy to guide the viewers attention.
Other changes were made such as in the bottom sections background to create a separate section where important details can be seen clearly.
e. Refined piece of graphic design work 5- Headphones Packaging.
I made the color of the box white, to allow the firework design on the front of the box to stand out. The message is fun, good times and pure enjoyment.
Additional text, technical instructions were added to the packaging to present a complete image of what the product packaging might look like.
The viewer is able to see the image of the final design and will be able to make an assessment of the design and advise further comments based on what they see.
ii. How does the design apply design theory and technical principles, development, and adaptation of print and digital media to effectively communicate messages to target audiences?
a. Graphic design work 1- David Bowies mag_swap.
In this project, I direct the viewers attention from the highest point to the end by using color, different font sizes (scales), balancing the negative space between the image and the text, transparency of the image (Bio magazine) and texture as seen on the backgrounds being used.
b. Graphic design work 2-Pasta Amore table tent.
I used an image of wood to create the narrative of a meal prepared in an old fashion kitchen. The restaurant name and text are in different sizes to help direct the customer to continue reading. The attention is directed to the name of the restaurant and then continues to the photographs of the meals directly below. I used lines to show each item on the appetizers list and the front of the table tent, showing of different dishes. The colors are meant to create a connection with the best known traditional Italian dish spaghetti with red sauce.
c. Graphic design work 3- Cloudy Central Park
The line directs the viewer to the lake and every image after they come into focus. The colors are clear without taking away the image of a cloudy sky. The negative space is divided between sky and land, focusing on the lake. The trees help frame both sides of the lake and the bridge.
d. Graphic design work4-Music Event poster.
The design was meant to appear random for the top section (dark blue) It is meant to break the rules while still following hierarchy to direct the viewer to each section. The bright white color is meant to contrast against the dark background to create attention. Ive also used texture on some of the text and visual interest with other images in the background design.
e. Graphic design work 5- Headphones Packaging.
The logo in red Exc!tement is the name of the product and the white background allows for the logo to stand out. The large window allows the viewer to see the headset inside and associates the word with the product. The design on the bottom section enhances the view of the product as a top of the line, expensive but well worth the price product. Colors are used to create attention to the product. The information with precise details about the product is placed on both sides of the main text, for balance and on the back of the package to avoid distractions from the product.
iii. How does the design target an audience through meaningful content, craftsmanship, and appropriate aesthetics?
iv. How does the design demonstrate consideration for detail, coherence, impact, practicality, and communication?
a. Graphic design work 1- David Bowies mag_swap.
The audience for these magazines is interested in the life of the artist. One of the magazine covers (Bio) is meant for a more general audience, not necessarily people who have been lifelong fans of the artist but still recognize the great achievements through the course of his career. The second magazine cover is intended for people who followed him through the course of his music career and although they are aware of his other accomplishments, they are true lifelong fans of his music.

e. Graphic design work 5- Headphones Packaging.
This packaging is for someone who is into flashy packaging, name brands and brand recognition to which he/she would attribute a high monetary value but at the same time, is not so interested in the price for the item.

iii. How does the design demonstrate the ability to analyze, research, and explore a variety of information sources to adequately address how the target market might interpret a design message?
There are many ways to establish marketing research such as via data collection, research, observation, surveys, offering samples and asking for feedback from customers. I believe all my potential accounts, represented by these projects would first research their restaurant location, their food, the local demographic, etc.
c. Research: Evaluate, select, and effectively apply various tools and technology to the design, development, and dissemination of graphic and media works

Yes, I believe all my designs do.
f. Summation
i. Why did you select the items you did to include in the portfolio?
I chose these items because each project was very different from one another and I wanted to get a final opinion on my choices, even the projects Id done for previous courses. This way, I could be sure Id receive objective opinions for my pieces. As Ive mentioned before, I am looking to start doing freelance work right after this semester and I want to what are my strong areas and what areas I need to work on.
ii. How did you respond to the feedback provided, by either consciously choosing to make a change or choosing not to?
I made sure I took each suggestion and understood the reasoning behind it. The final changes were implemented after a lot of thought and research.
